Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Seeds.
Tiny spaceships
full of life, like alien pods
transforming people we know
into people we don’t.

Catbirds calling, “Meow!”
Roosters crowing.
Neighbor’s German shepherd
howling and growling.

Scent of rain,
air familiar as favorite shoes—
Comforting, comfortable.

Crickets chirping.
Earth.
Worms.
Earthworms,

Black earth crawling.
Fungal, fecal, fertile soil.

Fingers blackened.
Blackened fingers digging.

Seeds.
Capsules, containers,
delivery systems of life
rocketed from planet B.

Kept moist and sunbeamed,
exotic shapes emerge, transforming
into trailing vines, blossoming yellow flowers,
ripening fruit.

Seeds—
Magically morphed
into weighty, wine-red fruit,
lifeblood of the kitchen—
perfect plum tomatoes.
