Desert Dweller

I have to agree with Mr. Macaque.
The gorilla is a pretty nice fella—
Ms. lemur might defer.

Liberals are chaotic.
They want diversity: no two alike—
wild tangled thickets, discordant jazz
and a tutti-frutti buffet.

Conservatives are homogeneous.
They want conformity:
everyone the same—
a paved straight lane, a ticking metronome
and a bowl of plain vanilla.

Both say they want unity.
Neither wants to concede,
so there is no compromise.

Let’s stop monkeying around.
Build a box big enough
to accommodate vanilla—
and tutti-frutti.

Baboons, gibbons, bonobos—
most primates get along.
Why can’t we?
