70th Anniversary

It’s strange to wake up each day

a bit older, but feeling the same.

This is the seventieth anniversary of my birth.

For seventy years, I’ve been walking this

pathway toward my death.

There have been hardships and joy, no more or less

than for most other human beings.

My identity hasn’t changed,

but my body has, incrementally.

Not much difference from yesterday to today.

But in hindsight,

a few more aches, a few more scars,

a few more memories,

and a few memories foggy or lost.

I try to focus on who I am today

instead of who I was in the past.

My options may be different,

but I still have choices.
