Desert Dweller

-thoughts on life, death and gardening.

Earth thinks in circles,
dreams in spirals, in
nautilus shell revolutions.
She paints in sprays of wildflowers,
clusters of moss and lichens,
stands of trees, fields of grass.

She moves in tidal dances,
forward and back, in stretches of time
too long for human comprehension.
She tells her stories across eons.
Her epics occupy epochs.

Humanity is not excused from her dance.
Every breath of air weaves ever-shifting formations
of clouds into our blood.
Hitching a ride on water molecules,
invisibly climbing the escalator of evaporation,
gathering into cloudbursts, torrents split into rivers,
riding ocean swells phytoplankton
ends in our veins, transformed.

Sheer wonder—awe—
is the only appropriate response
to the majesty of Mother Earth.
