Desert Dweller

-thoughts on life, death and gardening.

Warrior’s Way

Minute to minute,
second to second,
we constantly focus
on personal concerns,
so busy thinking,
we build a wall to perception.

Although surrounded by eternity,
we don’t experience it.
Surrounded by eternity,
it is inaccessible because
we separate
and insulate our selves from it.

We exist in a mysterious place.

It is unwise to believe that the world
is only as you think it is.
It is even more foolish
to go into the unknown carelessly,
in the wrong frame of mind,

Enlightened beings change,
continually enhancing their awareness.

Lasting gains in awareness
come by becoming warriors,
through life-or-death challenges.
Without impetus
of a life-or-death situation,
we remain unaware.

To the universe,
we have no identity;
we have only
power and effect.

Normal lives
do not create
the mood of a warrior.

We falsely assure ourselves
our world is understandable
and safe.
When we encounter
something we can’t understand,
we assume
it will be sorted out
safely at some point.

Warriors embrace a certain mood,
hold themselves accountable
for every experience and outcome.
The warrior’s mood applies
when exposed
to extreme unrelenting danger.

Why would anyone in a comfortable life
seek this state of being?

Warriors take everything seriously,
while laughing at all of it.
There are no casual meals.
no casual sex,
no casual walks in the desert.

Awareness of death gives
freedom and abandon,
gives power and flair to deeds.
Death is always nearby.
If we survive this battle,
then, we will die another day.

For warriors
there is no casual thinking.
Every thought
is an action that controls
awareness and perception.

Perception determines everything.
Nothing is real,
but everything matters.

To survive,
we must be open to the powers
that exist all around us,
without being annihilated by them.

This world is a mysterious place.

This dreamed world
is not our arbitrary choice;
it exists to express the intent
of the universe.

Once we are cast into the dream,
what we do in it is our choice.
We are responsible
for everything that happens.
