Desert Dweller

now that winter is history,
the underground river, flowing
through caverns and cisterns,
rarely surfacing
as trickles and pools
becomes visible.
 
towering cottonwoods,
wooden cathedrals, changing
from barren to green,
give away the secret location
of this magical waterway,
verdant symbol
of natures rebirth, meandering
through desiccated grassland.

serpentine sanctuary,
playground for jokester coyote,
divine dove, hovering hummingbird,
jovial javelina and quavering quail.

what is essential is invisible to the eye.
